



Sour Cream Onion Gourmet Bread Mix

Can I use this mix in my 1 pound capacity or 1.5 pound capacity bread machine?
We have designed our mixes specifically for 2 lb. capacity machines. However, you may still find success with 1.5 lb. capacity machines. You may expect to see the top of the loaf touch the lid of the machine towards the end of the baking cycle. This may lead to imperfect baking in that one spot on the loaf. The rest of the loaf should be fine. For 1 lb. bread machines, we recommend only running the bread on the dough cycle and then transfer the dough to a pan for baking in a conventional oven. See packaging for more info.
Why do the directions ask me to use a thermometer?
Yeast is very sensitive to heat and other environmental factors. We have tested and designed our mixes to find the sweet spot for yeast activity to get the best rise. Even just a few degrees off on water temperature can make a big impact on the quality of your bread. Measuring the temperature of your water accurately is the best way to ensure consistently successful bread baking.
I followed the directions exactly and I see had a problem with my bread? What can I do?
Sometimes bread issues happen. We are happy to help. Send us a picture of your bread and a picture of the back packaging of your bread mix to our customer support email at customerservice@preparedpantry.com. Include as much detail as possible about your baking process and bread machine model so we can troubleshoot the cause of the issue.
Should I adjust my mix for high altitudes?
We don't recommend making any changes to the mix for high altitudes. We have tested our mixes in a variety of locations and have fine tuned each mix to be the best product possible.
I don't have a bread machine or a stand-type mixer. Can I still make this bread in my oven?
- Yes! Our bread mixes are designed for bread machines or oven. You can make them in a variety of ways such as a free standing artisan loaf, rolls, hamburger buns and more. See our Bread Baking Guide for more info on baking bread in the oven.

Everything you need to know about your new bread!
- How does this compare to an onion bagel? Well, it's a soft bagel. The onion flavor is a little warmer, a little richer.
- Well, does it make a good sandwich? Yes. It's a great sandwich bread with enough structure to hold the sandwich together. It's moist and soft but not airy with an open crumb. (See the sandwich above.) It's rigid enough that you can hold it, bite it and will hold its shape.
- How strong is the onion? It's definitely onion, but it's mild and mellow.
- The reviewers say that kids like it. Come on, kids don't like onions? Yeah, I know. But they say "the whole family," "kids," or "grandkids." It's mellow enough that kids like it. And it's white, and it's soft--that helps.
- Is it sweet at all? The sweet onions make it just a little sweet. And it certainly smells good.
- What kind of sandwiches do you make? It's perfect for meats and cheese. Someone used cream cheese as a spread for a turkey sandwich. That sounds right. It's a better sandwich bread than a bagel.
- What do I do with the leftovers? That's assuming you have leftovers. It's a great freezer bread. It's handy to cut waxed paper squares and put them between the slices so they don't stick together. But oh, you're in for a treat--it tastes like a warm bagel transformed into toast!
- How big is the loaf? In your bread machine, it should be six inches tall or more. It will be just under two pounds.

Grilled Cheese and Bacon on Sour Cream Onion Bread
This is a straightforward sandwich. Make it as any grilled cheese sandwich. The bacon should be crispy. We prefer a white cheese like Havarti or Gouda. As a condiment, try mayonnaise spiked with ranch dressing.
Grilled Bacon and Beans Sandwich
This is a fun sandwich. In this image, it's loaded on pumpkin walnut bread, but it works just as well on sour cream onion bread--after all, it tastes like an onion bagel. Drain the beans well and pat them dry on a paper towel.
Ham, Bacon, and Sweet Mayonaise Sandwich
This is made on Texas toast and is made with sour cream onion bread. Pan-fry thick slices of the bread in a buttered pan until it is crispy. Make sure the bacon is fried to a crisp. The sweet mayonnaise is made with equal parts mayo and maple syrup and then spiked with Dijon mustard.
Roast Beef Sandwich with Parmesan Mayonaise
This sandwich is spread with parmesan mayonnaise. Add grated cheese to your mayo to taste. Make sure that you add enough cheese to complement the roast beef.
