New! Swedish Brown Sourdough Bread Mix

This bread just tastes good! It's a European brown bread with a touch of sweetness and sourdough. It's a different kind of bread.

Can I use this mix in my 1 pound capacity or 1.5 pound capacity bread machine?

We have designed our mixes specifically for 2 lb. capacity machines. However, you may still find success with 1.5 lb. capacity machines. You may expect to see the top of the loaf touch the lid of the machine towards the end of the baking cycle. This may lead to imperfect baking in that one spot on the loaf. The rest of the loaf should be fine. For 1 lb. bread machines, we recommend only running the bread on the dough cycle and then transfer the dough to a pan for baking in a conventional oven. See packaging for more info.

Why do the directions ask me to use a thermometer?

Yeast is very sensitive to heat and other environmental factors. We have tested and designed our mixes to find the sweet spot for yeast activity to get the best rise. Even just a few degrees off on water temperature can make a big impact on the quality of your bread. Measuring the temperature of your water accurately is the best way to ensure consistently successful bread baking.

I followed the directions exactly and I see had a problem with my bread? What can I do?

Sometimes bread issues happen. We are happy to help. Send us a picture of your bread and a picture of the back packaging of your bread mix to our customer support email at customerservice@preparedpantry.com. Include as much detail as possible about your baking process and bread machine model so we can troubleshoot the cause of the issue.

Should I adjust my mix for high altitudes?

We don't recommend making any changes to the mix for high altitudes. We have tested our mixes in a variety of locations and have fine tuned each mix to be the best product possible.

I don't have a bread machine or a stand-type mixer. Can I still make this bread in my oven?

This is breakfast bread. At least to me. A very good breakfast bread.

Over the weeks of development, I brought three loaves home and fell in love.  It's one of my favorite toast and jam breads, a breakfast bread.

  • Toast and jam
  • Breakfast sandwiches
  • French toast

And I like peanut butter and jam like the kids, and will eat it like your kids. If you're trying to get the kids to eat brown bread, try this one.

It's not a musclebound sourdough; it has just a touch of sourdough, and it's a little sweeter than sourdough.  The touch of sweetness and sourdough comes off as a bit of extra flavor. It's still a mild, pleasant bread. It's a light, moist bread.

We tinkered with this bread for weeks. I'm not sure it's very Swedish anymore, but it's too good not to share.

Over the weeks of development, I brought three loaves home and fell in love with them. It's one of my favorite toast and jam breads, a breakfast bread. And I like peanut butter and jam like the kids, and that certainly works. If you're trying to get the kids to eat brown bread, try this one. And I can eat a grilled cheese sandwich for breakfast.

"So many people need a hug, a forehead kiss, and a grilled cheese sandwich cut diagonally."--Carla

The sandwich below is grilled until the cheese is goey, a white cheese like Havarti, with a couple slices of deli ham buried and warm honey smeared over the top. Eat it with a fork. It'll make your day.

  • It sounds like you're describing a white bread, not a wheat bread. What gives?  No, it's a wheat bread, it's just soft and gentle. It's a great brown bread, not harsh at all.
  • What makes this bread better than other wheat breads? It's a fine recipe with a great sourdough tempered with a little bread flour.  The bread flour is a fresh flour milled in Montana.
  • Does fresh matter? Yes. Flour is packaged in paper bags. We get our flour weekly. Then we get it out of the paper and into the mixes and Mylar bags right away. That helps.
  • Tell me about the sourdough. We get the sourdough, a dry sourdough, from a Spanish company.  Different regions have different sourdoughs. European sourdoughs tend to be milder than San Francisco sourdough.
  • What else makes this bread different?  The preservatives. We hate preservatives. So, we don't use any. It's a healthier product.
  • Well, how long will my bread last? The mix will last a long time. Most mixes will last a year or more. Once baked, use it in four or five days.  If you need it to last longer than that, freeze part of your loaf.

Bread Pudding

This is a soft bread, so you can make great bread pudding. If your bread is several days old, slice it and put it in the freezer for future bread puddings. You can mix breads.

You can be creative. Bread pudding is very forgiving. Add nuts and fruit—peaches, berries, and apples. There's only one rule: Use your probe-type thermometer to get the pudding to 165 degrees.

The following link will give you five recipes.  Pick one and add fruit or modify it the way you would like.

Choose a recipe and create a pudding they will love.

Swedish brown sour dough

Enjoyed it BUT
The dough did not fully cook or bake thru in m bread machine. Followed directions etc so it was disappointing. I have another swedish mix and will try it again and see what happens. Good tasting bread tho.

Excellent

I like the sourdough taste with the brown bread texture. I am a huge fan of dark bread like rye, but with the sourdough added, this bread becomes something else and is on the short list of my favorites!
