The Original Famous Rice Krispies Treat Recipe

This page is for those who like easy treats, or their kids like treats and their moms are busy. (All moms are busy.) We've added easy treats that you and your kids will be interested in.

  • Caramel Popcorn Kits. These are a cousin to rice krispie treats. The kits come with caramel candy mixes. Pour the warm candy over the popcorn just like pouring candy over rice krispies. Choose your favor. The kits come with popping corn.
  • Buckeyes. These are no-bake chocolate covered candies with a peanut butter flavored filling.
  • Brownies. If you have kids, brownie mixes are essential. Scrape the batter into a pan and bake.
  • Coconut Macaroons. These you do bake, but all you do is add water and scoop the moistened coconut mix onto a baking sheet.  It's fun, but not necessary, to put  chocolate kisses, cherries, or dabs of jam in the centers. (These are thumbprints made with raspberry jam, lemon pie filling, or chocolate kisses.  The pink is made with raspberry flavor and red food coloring.)

Rice Krispies Treats are  meant for people who love easy treats. This is the original recipe. Well, almost. We updated the text a bit. A little modernization doesn't hurt. And we added some vanilla which we think makes it better.

This is a very good Rice Krispies Treats recipe. For more rice krispie treats recipes see, How to Make Big Boy Rice Krispies Treats.

Ingredients

4 tablespoons (1/2 stick) butter
4 cups miniature marshmallows
2 teaspoons vanilla extract (optional)
6 cups Kellogg’s Rice Krispies cereal or equal

Directions

Butter a 9 x 13-inch baking pan.

1. In a large pan on the stovetop, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows. Stir until the mixture is melted and smooth. Add the optional vanilla.
2. Add the rice cereal. Stir until the cereal is uniformly combined with the marshmallow mixture.
3. Remove the mixture to the buttered pan. Evenly distribute the mixture and press it down into the pan with buttered fingers, a piece of waxed paper, or a spatula. Let cool and cut into squares.

Baker’s notes:

  1. If you use a large enough pan, you can mix the treats right in the pan, not in a bowl. The hot pan makes it a little easier to stir the mixture together and there is less clean-up.
  2. Rice Krispies Treats are best eaten the same day.
  3. Instead of vanilla, you can use another flavor. The strengths of extracts and flavors vary.  I don't know whether it's the rice cereal or the marshmallow  that seems to absorb the flavor. We specified two teaspoons when one teaspoons seems like it should do.  You may wish to use one teaspoon in your first batch and if it not flavored enough, use two in the next batch.
